Lisa Fain’s blog Homesick Texan is a haven for so many misplaced Texans that I’m sure we outnumber the population of a few dozen small Texas towns. Her posts bring us weekly comfort with recipes and pictures that take us back to the state we love. I first discovered her site while looking for a recipe for the ubiquitous green salsa that you find on the tables of Houston-area Mexican restaurants. I found one. I also found a site that brought me comfort and delicious recipes.
Her book is a compilation of many of these recipes. Paging through the book I was struck with how many of these recipes were so familiar to me. How many of them I ate at church suppers, neighbor’s houses and restaurants countless times throughout my childhood. Many of them, like the Sausage Balls that I loved so much as a child, were long-forgotten until seeing them in the book. Others like the Salsa Fuego I’ve just never been able to properly duplicate.
For me, the book is like coming home. If you aren’t sure where to start, just make some her Chili Con Queso (without processed cheese), grab a bag of chips and chow down. Then you’ll be ready to settle in with the book and decide what to make next.
